about
Kai [ka-eh | k-ay]
Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
Kai (pronounced ka-eh) is a South Shore-based artist whose creative journey is rooted in her upbringing in Mi’kma’ki, where she was raised in a family of skilled artisans. Surrounded by woodworking, quilting, sewing, and carving from a young age, she developed a deep love for hands-on creation and storytelling through craft.
While earning a Bachelor of Community Development at Acadia University, Kai explored fine arts and came out as a queer woman—both experiences that deeply shaped her identity and artistic path. Her work has long been inspired by the natural world and the emotional weight of place. A move to a remote Yukon village during the pandemic offered space for reflection and new perspectives. Since returning to the East Coast, Kai has embraced vibrant contrasts—both in her palette and in her evolving sense of self.
Kai primarily works in watercolor but has recently ventured into acrylic abstracts, mixed media, and textile art—reconnecting with her roots in quilting and sewing. Her practice is grounded in a commitment to social change. Influenced by queer history, community resilience, and the complexities of identity, her art seeks to both celebrate and affirm queer experiences. She uses her work to highlight overlooked narratives and to explore what it means to belong, survive, and thrive as a queer person.
As both an artist and a community developer, Kai is passionate about building spaces that foster connection, expression, and action. She volunteers with local queer initiatives, advocates for more inclusive practices, and uses creativity as a tool for visibility and empowerment. Her vision is one where queer creativity is not just accepted but celebrated as vital to the cultural fabric of Mi’kma’ki.
