Fixed Points

2022-2025

11 X 15 watercolor pen and ink

The Fixed Points series is an exploration of the environments where I have found stillness, from the familiar shores of Nova Scotia to the distant sands of Santa Cruz. Each piece begins as a blind contour drawing; a practice where my eye never leaves the landscape and my pen never leaves the paper. This single, continuous line serves as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of the environment, where the land, sea, and sky are not separate entities but parts of one consistent, flowing story.

Every work in this series is titled with its exact geographical coordinates, grounding these abstract forms in a specific physical reality. By translating these blind contour studies into colorful, blocky watercolors, I am able to fine-tune my technical skills while capturing the “emotional weight of place”. The resulting images, characterized by vibrant hues like teal, sepia, and indigo, transform a technical exercise into a vibrant archive of personal refuge.

This series documents my travels and the areas I frequent to find quietude, bridging the distance between the East and West coasts. Whether it is the rocky edges of Battery Park or the sun-washed stretches of Seabright State Beach, these works highlight how we carry our experiences of nature with us. Fixed Points is more than a collection of landscapes; it is a visual map of the places that have anchored me, rendered through the rhythmic, unbroken movement of a single line.
