The indigo joy series is an exploration of the complex emotions found in deeply melodic, acoustic storytelling. While creating these pieces, I leaned into the “joy in sad lyrics” found in the music of artists like Donovan Woods and Kellie Loder. Specifically, tracks like Unlikely Seas and Lonely People informed the emotional landscape of this work… capturing that specific feeling of being seen and comforted by a “calm tune” even when the subject matter is heavy.
Like my other 2024 abstract works, this series was an intentional practice in letting go. By removing the pressure of realism, I allowed the fluid, “calm” textures of the music to dictate the movement of the paint.
The colors chosen for this series (rich purples, cooling indigos, and fuchsia pops) speak to the depth of the mind and the “unlikely seas” of our internal lives. The 140lb cold press paper provides a tactile, grounded surface that mirrors the organic, “unplugged” feel of the music. This series is a celebration of the resilience found in vulnerability and the vibrant joy that persists within our most emotional reflections.
